{"id":60,"date":"2019-03-29T16:41:05","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T19:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eventos.lacigf.org\/?page_id=60"},"modified":"2023-10-10T11:27:09","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:27:09","slug":"impact-on-the-regional-internet-governance-agenda","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eventos.lacigf.org\/en\/impact-on-the-regional-internet-governance-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Regional IG agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>IMPACT\nON THE REGIONAL INTERNET GOVERNANCE AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previous\neditions of the LACIGF meeting have certainly contributed to expand the\nunderstanding of Internet Governance issues, actors, institutions and\nprocesses, as well as their impact on the region. They have helped local\nstakeholders come together and opened the possibility of sharing information on\nthe work that is being done on various topics at national and regional level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this\nsense, the regional process has helped discussions not be limited to the\ntheoretical level but taken them to a practical level, as regional meetings\nallow a wealth of details that the global Internet Governance Forum does not\naddress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional\nmeetings have inspired and promoted Internet Governance related processes at\nnational level, including the creation of national hubs that allow remote\nparticipation in the global Internet Governance Forum. They have also served as\na platform for the convergence of different stakeholders and to broaden the\nrange of stakeholders involved in the various issues, thus opening up\npossibilities for the exchange of perspectives among different groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to\nthe regional process, we can now say that some of the region\u2019s visions,\nperspectives and issues have been brought up for global debate at the Internet\nGovernance Forum. Regional meetings have served as a catalyst for bringing\ntogether the various stakeholders, particularly those from the technical\ncommunity, academia and civil society organizations. Lately, progress has also\nbeen made in involving governments and the private sector, thanks to which\nparticipation is now more balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are still challenges and issues that need to be considered in the future. For example, the effect at national level has not been as strong as it was at regional level (a notable example of which is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/comunidades.cepal.org\/elac\/en\">eLAC<\/a>, especially after the Ministerial Meeting held in 2013 in Montevideo). It is also necessary to recognize the asymmetries in terms of participation and effective involvement of the different stakeholders, particularly civil society, in configuration and decision-making instances.
